What's a visit to London without Piccadilly Circus? For many, a trip to the famous square with its bright advertising displays is a must. The landmark attracts millions of people every week, both locals and tourists. Since its creation in 1819, the space has symbolised the vibrant energy of the British capital. But while the hustle and bustle on the surface never ceases, deep under the asphalt the London Underground makes sure that everything keeps moving. The Piccadilly Line, in particular, brings in numerable passengers directly into the heart of the city each and every day. However, after more than 50 years of service, its train fleet is showing its age – it's time for a new era in mobility.
Starting a new chapter below ground
London Underground (LUL) assigned the job of modernising the line to our partner Siemens Mobility. Altogether 94 new, ultramodern trains are to provide greater comfort, efficiency and capacity from 2025 onwards. The new fleet boasts an impressive vehicle design with 10% more transport volume, wide doors for rapid boarding and alighting and a powerful air-conditioning system – a blessing on hot days.
The technology that makes the difference
Modern vehicle engineering involves more than just capacity and passenger comfort, however. Smooth operation requires reli able energy systems. This is where HOPPECKE comes in: our highly advanced lithium-ion onboard power systems (LiAUX) are at the heart of the onboard electricity supply. In emergencies or power outages, they ensure a dependable supply of energy for devices such as lighting, air-conditioning and other electronic systems.
Thanks to specially developed battery containers designed to fit in the confined spaces in tunnels and depots, they meet the highest standards for safety, efficiency and ease of maintenance. What's particularly remarkable is that compared to conventional lead or nickel-cadmium batteries, the LiAUX systems save around 50% in weight and 40% in space – resulting in not only more room for passengers and technical fittings, but also significantly lower energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. For this groundbreaking development, Siemens Mobility hon oured HOPPECKE with a Technology Innovation Award in 2023 – well-deserved recognition for pioneering solutions that are powering the future of mobility.
The future in motion
With the deployment of the new trains starting in 2025, a new chapter is beginning for the Piccadilly Line. The innovative collaboration between Siemens Mobility and HOPPECKE will do more than bring noticeable improvement in passenger comfort: the project also sets new standards for environmental sustainability and technology. So the next time you're standing in Piccadilly Circus, you can be sure that under your feet, the future has already arrived.
